If even Google now goes all in on UGC

Tom Bogaert 3 min read BrandsCreator MarketingStrategy

There is a particular calm about a creator campaign that has been ticked off. Everyone has posted. Followers have been reached, and so have non-followers. The numbers sit in a deck that preferably looks better than last quarter's. Nice work. Next brief.

Only this: you now have content in which real people use your product. Will you do anything else with it?
Google invests in UGC: value beyond the collaboration
Anyone who looks beyond the campaign report sees material for their own ads. Experiences that can still help a potential customer choose three months from now. Answers to questions people keep asking, even when your marketing calendar has long since moved on.

And then there is Google. With the UGC Fresh Data Program, it wants to process fresh user experiences from participating platforms faster in Search. That does not suddenly turn every creator post into a ticket to an AI answer. It does make the question more interesting: which experiences do you actually have creators share — and how useful are they once everyone has finished posting?

What Google announced

On 8 October 2026, Google published the documentation for the programme. Approved platforms can submit user content and interaction signals through a separate data stream. The programme is intended exclusively for fresh, trending UGC. The aim: process and update first-hand experiences faster in Google Search.

No automatic SEO boost

According to Google's programme documentation, participants must be platforms with a lot of user content and a sizeable audience. Posts must, among other things, be publicly accessible, have their own stable URL and be linked to a creator. A creator campaign or brand website therefore does not get in automatically. Even for participants, Google guarantees no visibility in Search.

The Google UGC Fresh Data Program offers no automatic SEO boost!

And AI Search?

For AI Search, Google publishes separate guidelines. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, it stresses the importance of original, useful content. It explicitly names a review based on personal experience as an example of a distinctive perspective. Those AI features use content from Google's search index; here too, visibility is not guaranteed. The UGC programme itself does not promise inclusion in AI answers.

For brands in food, personal care, technology, home or sport, that direction is relevant. A real user's experience can help others understand when a product fits and how to use it.

What we ask creators

At Sunday Squad we work with micro-sportfluencers. We encourage them to think about relevant questions and situations of use when they create content. That gives a product a concrete place in daily life. That explanation can help today, but also later, when someone has the same question.

What it delivers for brands

Google is underlining the importance of authentic UGC. The new programme is about freshness; for us, the potential value after the collaboration lies in the content itself. As long as posts stay relevant and available, creators and brands can profit for longer from what they make together. With suitable usage rights, brands can also use that content in their own ad campaigns.

Three months from now, someone will still want to know whether those earbuds stay in while running. If your creator gives a useful answer today, that content can still help then.

Even when the campaign report was sent long ago.
